Amy Buttell, Writer & Editor

Analyzing trends, translating complexity

I'm a full-time freelance writer who analyzes trends and policy in an effort to help consumers and professionals place financial, health care and legal issues in context. My strengths include brainstorming ideas and developing them into lively and compelling articles.

I never write about a subject unless I understand it first, which means I'm relentless in researching complex topics and snagging the most knowledgable experts for their take. My writing has appeared in national magazines such as AARP: The Magazine, Consumers' Digest, Satisfaction as well as the popular consumer finance Web sites Bankrate.com, Creditcards.com, Cyberhomes.com and Interest.com. Other publications that frequently feature my writing include The Investment Professional, quarterly journal of the New York Society of Securities Analysts, the Financial Planning Association's Solutions practice management journal and Better Investing Magazine, where I've served as the mutual fund columnist for the past eight years. I frequently contribute cover stories and features on other topics for this magazine, which is published by the National Association of Investor's Corporation (NAIC).

My talent for demystifying complex topics earns me regular speaking engagements and user documentation and technical editing assignments. I also provide writing coaching services to financial professionals who want to improve their writing techniques and add publishing credentials to their resumes. These are just three other facets of my mission in life: making complex financial, legal and health care issues accessible to both professional and consumer audiences.

What's New: Appointed Contributing Writer to The Investment Professional; graduation

The Investment Professional is the quarterly publication of the New York Society of Securities Analysts, an association that supports the professional advancement of securities analysts in New York. In the inaugural issue, my in-depth feature on the economic policies of the presidential candidates included interviews with 12 experts, who attempted to move beyond the rhetoric typical of presidential campaigns. As of early March, many of the predictions forecast by the expert economics, academics and consultants had played out in Obama's policies and personnel selections.

In the second issue, I explored the potential benefits and drawbacks of the US abandoning generally-accepted accounting principals in favor of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). While momentum towards IFRS seemed in favor of a fairly rapid adoption in the US in early to mid-2008, the situation changed as the economic crisis became more serious. Even though there is still a good chance that IFRS will eventually be adopted by the SEC for publicly-traded US companies, the SEC has prolonged the comment period and the new commissioner has come out in favor of postponing the previously published timeline.

As a contributing writer, I will be a part of future issues of The Investment Professional, so look for more articles designed to to enhance securities analyst's understanding of issues in these complex economic times.

2009 brings another important event: graduation. In May, I will graduate from Mercyhurst College with a certificate in Accounting. Directly after graduation, I will enroll in the Becker CPA review. I expect to begin sitting for the four parts of the CPA exam in the Fall of 2009.

Healthcare coverage: Healthcare CFOs, OTC drugs

My story "The New Era CFO" appeared in the June 2007 of Hospitals and Health Networks, the flagship publication of the American Hospital Association. This story and others marked my entry into writing about healthcare trends for physicians and health care executives.

In 2007r, I contributed four features to Hospitals and Health Networks magazine, the flagship publication of the American Hospital Association. My story on the new era CFO was the cover story for the June magazine. See the link below.

My article on how to save money when purchasing over the counter medications appeared on the AOL home page. I surveyed a number of online and brick-and-mortar pharmacy oulets in a hunt for the cheapest prices and the Bankrate.com tech gurus created an interactive guide to the generics that are available for various illnesses and conditions.

Inside Healthcare, a bi-monthly publication of RedCoat Publishing, also features my writing on a variety of health care topics.

CPA Exam Candidate: Regulation is first

This summer and fall, I am keeping busy by studying for the CPA exam using Becker CPA Review. I have registered to take all four parts of the exam in the next six months. I'm starting with regulation and am spending a lot of time in class and out of class reviewing individual and corporate tax rules as well as business law.

In 2005, I began a course of study that will lead me to
become a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Financial Planner. I'm studying at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. under a certificate program for students who already have undergraduate degrees. After I pass the four parts of the CPA exam, I plan to enroll in a course of study to add the Certified Financial Planner designation to my resume.
